10 Tips for Norwegian Genealogy Research on Internet
Elderly Relatives
Before you start your genealogy research on internet ensure to
compile as much information as possible from elderly
relatives.
a) Record everything your relatives know about your family, names,
place of birth, date and other information.
b) Have a look at the old family albums together with your elderly
relatives and record names and date. One day it is too late and a
lot of information is gone for ever.
Internet Resources
Go to the Genealogy Society of Norway - DIS (DIS-Norge)
internet resource web page www.disnorge.no/genress/ and find what information
is available for the area you are researching. Make searches.
Commence with censuses and church records if they are
available.
DIStreff
As soon as you have records earlier than year 1920 in your
genealogy data base submit a GEDCOM file to DIS-Norge’s
DIStreff database and search in the same database
at www.disnorge.no/distreff/. When you receive the
results of your DIStreff contribution, make contact with the other
genealogists that you believe might have interesting data.
Usenet News
Check if the persons you are looking for already have been
mentioned in old messages at Usenet News genealogy discussion
groups by a search at www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/index.php?c=121
Other Genealogists
Contact other genealogists researching the same area as you. A
summary is available at DIS-Norge’s
Slektforskerbasen at www.disnorge.no/sfbasen/
Quality Control
Always remember to check the information you find on internet with
the original resources and keep your DIStreff
contribution up to date.
Good luck!
