Both PA2 (as I remember) and Doug's new RPA make a brief mention of
John Fenwick of South Carolina. Discussing the relatives of John
Fenwick of New Jersey, they both show that he had a nephew Robert
Fenwick, who was the "father by Anne Culcheth of John Fenwick of South
Carolina." Thus, John Fenwick of South Carolina was a great-nephew of
John Fenwick of New Jersey, and his mother was a lady named Anne
Culcheth.
Last year I noted that there was another immigrant to S.C. named
"Culceth Golighty." Born in 1706 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he was a
nephew of John Fenwick of SC, his mother being Dorothy Fenwick who
married Robert Golightly. His forename is interesting, being the
maiden name not of his mother, but of his maternal grandmother. One
might speculate that these Culcheths were fairly important to be
commemorated by descendants as remote as this.
Dugdale's 1664/5 Lancashire Visitation shows the following family
group. Thomas Culcheth of Culcheth, aged 36 in 1664, wife Anne
Bradshagh, and their children:
1. John, aet. 13 an. 23 Sept. 1664
2. Thomas
3. Jane
4. Mary
5. Frances
6. Anne
7. Catherine
I suggest this was the Anne who married Robert Fenwick. The biography
of John Fenwick of S.C. in Walter B. Edgar and N. Louise Bailey,
eds., _Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of
Representatives_, 2:244-45, mentions that he was born about 1675, while
his father, Robert Fenwick, was born in 1646. The Anne Culcheth found
in Dugdale's Visitation, above, would be about the right age to have a
son born circa 1675.
If this is the right Anne Culcheth, wife of Robert Fenwick, she would
have some interesting royal descents, as follows:
1. Edward I
2. Joan of Acre = Sir Gilbert de Clare
3. Margaret de Clare = Hugh de Audley
4. Margaret de Audley = Sir Ralph Stafford
5. Beatrice Stafford = Thomas de Ros
6. Sir William de Ros = Margaret Arundel
7. Margaret de Ros = James Tuchet, Lord Audley
8. Anne Audley / Tuchet = Sir Thomas Dutton
9. Isabel Dutton = Sir Christopher Southworth
10. Sir John Southworth = Helen de Langton
11. Sir Thomas Southworth = Margery Boteler
12. Cecily Southworth = John Culcheth
13. John Culcheth = Mawde Poole
14. John Culcheth = Jane Hawarden
15. Thomas Culcheth = Anne Bradshagh / Bradshaw
16. Anne Culceth
and
1. Edward I
2. Elizabeth = Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford
3. Sir William de Bohun = Elizabeth Badlesmere
4. Elizabeth de Bohun = Sir Richard FitzAlan
5. Elizabeth FitzAlan = Sir Robert Goushill
6. Joan Goushill = Sir Thomas Stanley
7. Elizabeth Stanley = Sir Richard Molineux
8. Sir Thomas Molineux = Anne Dutton
9. Sir William Molineux = Jane Rugge/ Rydge
10. Sir Richard Molineux = Eleanor Radclyffe
11. William Molineux = Bridget Carrell
12. Eleanor Molineux = Sir William Norris
13. Anne Norris = James Bradshagh / Bradshaw
14. Anne Bradshagh = Thomas Culcheth, as above
Sources: Dugdale's 1664/5 Lancashire Visitation (Bradshagh of the
Hagh, Culcheth of Culcheth, Molineux of Sefton, Norreis of Speke, and
Southworth of Samlesbury); _Ancestral Roots_, 8th ed., lines 9, 15, 20,
and 23.
*Or is the identity of Anne (Culcheth) Fenwick already known? |

"1. Edward I
2. Joan of Acre = Sir Gilbert de Clare"
Why do you only call him Sir Gilbert ? That sounds like a mere knight.
Wasn't he also 3rd Earl Gloucester, 7th Earl Hereford and 9th Earl Clare ?

I didn't list the titles of some of the well-known people. Sorry!
I should also make a correction to the name of one of the immigrants to
South Carolina: "Culcheth Golightly." His biography in _Biographical
Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives_ gives some
interesting variations on his first name: Culchith, Culchworth,
Culcketh, Culshe, and Cultcheth. |
