Looking for information on "Signor Christopher Thompson, born December 25, 1850, Bergen, Norway

  I'm sure his name was lost in translation by U.S.. Census Records takers. One U.S. Cencus record has him arriving in the U.S., in 1863 another in 1865.

  Any information would be helpful, possibly what his name could be in Norwegian.

  Edit: 6th Oct 09: I added zip files of some U.S. census records for SC Thompson. I also looked for where I got the information that he was born in Bergen, it was from here http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11881968/person/-371950517?ftm=1 not the best evidence. Link only works if a member of ancestry.com The tree has Bergen spelled as Bergin.

Well this is probably a wild guess, but maybe better than no guess at all. I found 2 boys born in Bergen 25/12 1850. One I could rule out, he lived in Norway many years later.

I guessed that a boy 13-15 years old would probably not travel alone, but with his family.
The other boy was named Peter Odin Petersen Ofstad. Parents Peter Petersen Ofstad and Helene Susanne Storksdatter. They had 4 children. I have only found 1 of the familymember in Norway in the 1865 cencus. That was a son called Stork Severin born 10/6 1849. I could not find him later.

Those others I am not able to find in 1865 or later. So maybe it is the correct family . The problem is that the official records for emigration in Norway starts in 1867, so I am not able to find them there.
The other children are Serene Augusta born 6/1 1848 and Karen Helene Susanne born 30/3 1854.

Thompson could be Thomsen, Thomassen, Thommesen etc. Signor might be Sigurd, Sigvard Sigvar, Sigvardt, Sigfrid, Sigval, Sigmund, etc - or even Signor ( I have seen the female name Signora was sometime used on daughters,- maybe someone used the male version of it

I agree to that, but just recently there have been 2 cases where people changed name. One changed name from Torkel Tolleivson to Tom Thompson. The other changed his name to Glenn Thompson. I do not remember his original name but it was far from Glenn Thompson. So it is still possible that this could be the man.

Now we can rule out Peter Odin, because I found his death record from 1865.

So we are still far from the goal.

Thank you for your efforts, I have updated the post and added a zip file with US census records for Signor. Census records show he was born in Norway and so were his parents. I got Bergen from a family tree post on ancestry.com, So not positive that Bergen was birthplace. His date of birth I got from http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=/eng/s earch/ancestorsearchresults.asp
